MAKE YOUR OWN TOOTHPASTE
Have you taken a look at the ingredients in your toothpaste? Most use SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE, a foaming agent, which is also used in engine degreasers. They also contain TRICLOSAN which has shown links with an increase in allergies and disrupted hormonal development. ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS and ARTIFICIAL COLOURS are also used – the research against these products are too lengthy to list here.
Here’s a NATURAL TOOTHPASTE that has NO HARMFUL CHEMICALS, NO FOAMING AGENTS, EFFECTIVE AGAINST BACTERIA, INEXPENSIVE and QUICK and SIMPLE to make. Ingredients are readily available from Health Food stores.
Coconut oil contains antiseptic fatty acids that can help prevent fungal and bacterial infections. It also helps to retain moisture in the mouth and provides protective barrier.
Bicarbonate of soda has a mild abrasive action which helps to remove stains and is also well known for its ability to absorb odours.
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt is high in minerals and is a natural healing compound.
Peppermint essential oil is vitalising, cooling, soothing and refreshing.
Sage essential oil is a wonderful antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antimicrobial and antiseptic.
Lemon essential oil has antibiotic and antiseptic properties.
Tea tree essential oil helps to soothe irritations and inflammation whilst stimulating healing. It is a natural antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-microbial.
INGREDIENTS
60g Coconut virgin oil (melted)
60g Bicarbonate of soda
40g Pink Himalayan Salt (blended to a fine powder)
40 drops of Peppermint essential oil
5 drops of Sage essential oil
5 drops of Lemon essential oil
3 drops of Tea tree essential oil
METHOD
In a Pyrex glass jug, melt the coconut oil. Add the bicarb of soda and salt (fine powder) and mix well with a hand beater or stick blender. Put in the fridge for 30 mins. Take out, blend again with hand beater or stick blender. The mix should be quite thick by this stage. Add essential oils* Store in a wide-mouthed jar (with lid). Use a spatula to dispense onto toothbrush.
*Don’t be tempted to add the essential oils to the mix when it is hot/warm. Essential oils are very volatile and high temperatures can cause the essential oils to evaporate, as well as have a detrimental effect on their chemical makeup.
